Heather Elizabeth Garland
Heather Elizabeth Garland is an artist who lives and works in New York. Garland received her BFA in painting from Indiana University in 2003 and her MFA from Pratt Institute in 2010. Her awards include an award for excellence in painting and drawing from Indiana University as well as an honors study abroad grant to study in Italy. She has had two solo exhibitions at ArtLand Gallery in Brooklyn, and has shown at Prince Street Gallery, New York, The Painting Center, New York, and with Arch Collective.
Heather Elizabeth Garland creates paintings that are diaristic and cycle around the minutia of every day life. Her eccentricities (Godzilla is her spirit animal) and penchant for romance add drama to work that might otherwise seem like mundane color studies. Tottering between saccharine sweet, and out-patient anger therapy, her paintings have a rawness that both attract and repel. With her indulgent use of color, texture, and exploratory paint application, she creates work that acknowledges art history, while still searching for its place in the 21st century.
